While Iowa is known for open lands and corn fields, Des Moines is a place of its own. Not only is it the state capital, but it has also evolved into a hip and trendy place. The food scene especially has exploded. Some of the top restaurants have been featured on the TV show Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. Swanky dive bars are highly celebrated. Not to mention, the Des Moines Farmers Market draws in tens of thousands of people each week.
As a local, I would love to tell you all about my three favorite restaurants.
801 Grand Steak And Chop House
This is absolutely the place to get a delicious steak and impress your date too. Located in one of the tallest buildings in downtown, the 801 Grand Steak and Chop House provides upscale American dining with a big wine selection and beautiful city views. In addition to the prime rib and the filet mignon, enjoy classics such as the wedge salad and their take on mac-n-cheese.
Flying Mango
Imagine taking BBQ and giving it some Caribbean flair with a dash of Cajun cuisine. This is what the menu looks like at Flying Mango. It’s no wonder they were featured on national TV with Guy Fieri! The brisket is smoky, tender, and full of flavor. Their Memphis-style ribs are mouth-watering. For Cajun food lovers, try their shrimp and grits and Cajun catfish. You won’t be disappointed. In addition to all of the great food they offer, this place has great service and is family-friendly.
Django
Django is the place to enjoy frites galore: duck frites, steak frites, and even moules frites (mussels). They specialize in French cuisine and offer an array of salads, soups, steaks, seafood, and desserts. Order any of their charcuterie boards to enjoy tasty cheeses and not-so-common meats such as Saucisson Sec (traditional French-style dry-cured sausage) and Country Pork Pate.
If you want to sample what they have to offer, stop by for one of their happy hours to enjoy their selection of draft beers, wine, or martinis along with their appetizers (one of them is a charcuterie board!).
