Why I Became A Financial Advisor

Many of us know what we enjoy doing, but not always can we turn it into a career. Growing up, I didn’t always know what I wanted to do, but I did know I wanted a job that allowed me to help people and use my math skills. While attending Drake University, I fell in love with finance and investing. Combining my passion for helping people and my interest in finance made perfect sense.

Starting My Career

After graduating college, I entered the financial services industry in 1990, joining a major financial firm. Just two years later, I founded my own firm, Garland & Associates. Many people wonder why I went independent and started a financial services firm so soon after entering the industry. The truth is, I knew how I wanted to serve my clients and the best way I could do this was by running my own firm.

I created my firm with the goal to provide superior financial planning for all of my clients and be the best comprehensive financial planning organization possible based on my and my team’s commitment to client service, professional judgment and the skills of those individuals affiliated with Garland & Associates.

Throughout life, I’ve observed so many good people who aren’t prepared for some of the inevitable transitions in life that happen to all of us, from retirement to the death of loved ones. My goal was and always is to help good people and their families prepare for those life events with proper strategies and planning.

My Career Today

Over these past 25 years, my firm has grown significantly and now serves clients across the country, with offices located in West Des Moines, Iowa and Carlsbad, California. While my firm has grown, we remain rooted in our independence, which allows us to offer our clients an unbiased and objective approach to serving their investment and wealth management needs.

I want clients to feel appreciated by us and comfortable to share their greatest fears and desires. I am always available for my clients and their families, and I hope they recognize that we listen to and deeply respect them and their goals and wishes.

The Triumphs And Hurdles

It’s not always an easy industry in which to work. As I build many lifelong relationships with clients, it’s always difficult when a client or one of their family members dies. This is something that never gets easier, but is, unfortunately, a part of life and a side effect of this job.

Despite the struggles, I can’t imagine any other career. The greatest joy and satisfaction comes from helping clients create a plan that helps them work toward their needs, and it’s fulfilling when they achieve their goals. Despite having worked with so many clients, I still get excited by the fact that I get to help so many people pursue their goals.
